Location often times plays an important factor in determining the success of commercial-based architecture. In this case, we venture into an interesting proposal of revitalising a potential space in the heart of Bukit Bintang area, a commonly forgotten retail boulevard amidst the busy blocks of Plaza Low Yat and its vicinities.
Currently known as Bukit Bintang Park (BB Park), this 30 000-square-feet, open-layout styled retail row houses several F&B outlets, electronics store, gift shops, pop-up stalls and convenience stations that somewhat failed in capturing the public's attention due design factors such as poor frontages and, in addition to the lack of anchored tenant. Given the said challenges, besides eradicating randomly-designed ramps and unnecessary steps of this interesting space, our goal was to transform the existing BB Park to serve as an intended boulevard-styled retail and a gateway to the IT-electronics mall, connecting visitors from the main entrance at Jalan Bukit Bintang to Plaza Low Yat. Thus, an iconic entrance statement for the frontages, paired with a new configuration of the retail layout are the main design priority of this explorative proposal.
Design strategies include providing design treatments to anchored tenants while relocated to strategic corners of the boulevard, introducing an open courtyard, addition of urban elements such as an art wall, and redesigning visitor routes into narrower, winding lanes as part of the exploration within the boulevard itself.
